Password managers, compared simply
A password manager remembers a strong, different password for every account. You only remember one main password. CISA recommends using one. (CISA: Use strong passwords)

How to pick (in 3 questions)
- Do you want free? Bitwarden and Proton Pass have free plans that work on all your devices. NordPass and RoboForm have free plans with device limits.
- Sharing with family? Most have a family plan with a shared vault, so you can share the Wi-Fi password or streaming login without texting it.
- A tiny office? Pick a business or team plan, so you can remove access when someone leaves. See our tiny office checklist.
Set it up in one evening
- Pick one manager and install the app and browser add-on.
- Make one long main password. A short sentence of random words is easy to remember.
- Turn on two-step login for the manager itself. See app vs text codes.
- Change your email and bank passwords first. They unlock everything else.
- Many managers also store passkeys.
